Beginners Jewelry Making
When you decide that you are going to make your own beautiful beaded jewelry you have a ton of different options. Knowing where to begin isn't easy. However, there are some things that can make your first necklace or bracelet very easy. You just need to know where to begin. What you will need. You will need nylon coated beading wire. This is easy to find and can even be as inexpensive as $2 a roll. You will also need the beads of your choice (you can choose different colors, textures, and even a wide range of materials). In addition to that you will want to have a good pair of scissors, crimp pliers, crimp beads, and a clasp. Putting together your piece. The biggest difference between a necklace and bracelet is the length. You will want to measure out how long you want your piece adding about three or four extra inches, cut your wire to this length. If you use a bead board you can lay out your beads in the pattern of your choice and know how many you need to complete the piece to your desired length. Once you have cut your wire you will want to begin by attaching one side of the clasp. To do this run the wire through the loop in your clasp. Fold it over so that you have a long wire (for your piece) and a short wire about one and a half inches. Place a crimp bead over both wires. Press it close to your clasp. Take your crimp pliers. You will notice two notches in your pliers. Place the first notch (closest to the handle) around your crimp bead and squeeze the pliers shut. This will crush your bead into a crescent moon shape. Next, turn your moon so that it is standing up in the second notch (closest to the end). Squeeze the pliers close. This will fold the bead in half. Last, stick the bead in the flat portion of the pliers' tip. Gently squeeze to tighten. This process is referred to as crimping and will hold the wires tight. If you wish for a little extra security add a drop of glue (I recommend bead fix). Now that you have one half of the clasp attached, you can string your beads in the pattern that you choose. Run the long wire and the short wire through the first few beads. Finish the rest of the piece on the long wire. When you have completed the bead work, add a crimp bead and your clasp. Fold the wire and run it through the crimp bead and the last four or five beads. Pull it all tight and crimp the crimp bead using the method described above. Design. This is all it takes to have a simple bracelet or necklace. However, this can be used for multi-strand pieces, and you can get creative in coming up with new design ideas using this method. Now that you have mastered the simplest of methods you can get creative and have lots of fun making all sorts of pieces. |
