Make Your Own Bath Salts

Making your own bath salts can be fun, easy, and rewarding. You can use these salts to relax in your own bath, detox, give as gifts, and even sell if you choose to. They can be as inexpensive or as expensive as you choose and you can have a lot of fun making decisions and creating your own unique salts.

You Will Need.
You will need a large mixing bowl. The more salt you wish to mix up at one time the larger the bowl. You will also need a measuring cup, a wooden spoon, a tablespoon, and an aluminum covered baking sheet. To make salts it requires salt. You can also choose to add colorant, fragrance, moisturizers, and baking soda.

The Salts.
To make bath salts the only thing you have to have is salt. You can choose to use just Epsom salts, which are very inexpensive, or get into fancy salts which can increase blood flow, detox the body, and have various other benefits. Most salts include at least some Epsom salts because they are less expensive and have their own good properties. However, you can also include sea salts, mountain salts, and other salts for a wide range of benefits. I suggest using 1/3 to 1/2 Epsom Salts and then mixing that with two or more other salts.

The Colorant
Some fancy salts are already colored due to the mineral content that they have. This can be a wonderful natural way to color your salts. However, you can also use soap colorant (powdered or liquid) and even food coloring for inexpensive coloring options. Both of these are safe for the skin and the bath tub.

The Fragrance.
For beautiful smelling bath salts you can use fragrance oils, which are synthetic, or essence oils, which are all natural. The aromatherapy benefits of the fragrance are best with essence oils. I have heard of perfume, cologne, and body spray also being used, but have never tried it myself.

The Moisturizers.
Bath salts have a lot of benefits. They relax the muscles, detox the body, are great for the cells, and are known for a lot of other great effects. However, you can also make them great moisturizers that are very healthy for the skin if you wish. You can add oils. Each type of oil has its advantages, but you can also choose an oil for how light it is or how it smells. Some great oils to work with are olive oil, nut and seed oils (such as peanut oil and sunflower seed oil), fruit oils (such as avocado oil), and exotic oils (such as jojoba and hemp oils). You can also add things that are wonderful for the skin such as Vitamin E oil, Aloe Vera gel, and glycerin.

Baking Soda.
While it certainly isn't necessary, baking soda can make for a wonderful additive to your bath salts. It too is known for cleaning, relaxing, and detoxing the body. It can also be the perfect finish for your salts.

The Process
1.Mix your salts. You will want to start by mixing your salts in your bowl. Simply measure out your desired amount (or eyeball it) and stir them up.
2.Add your colorant. When adding to your salts it is important to go slow. Start with a few drops of your dye or a pinch of your colorant and then stir well. Continue adding a little and stirring until you achieve your desired color.
3.Add your fragrance. In the same way you added your colorant you want to add only a little bit of fragrance at a time. Start with five drops. Thoroughly stir and smell your product. You want a fragrance that can easily be detected, but one that isn't over powering. You can add more as needed, but should only add three to five drops at a time.
4.Mix your moisturizers together. You will only need a little bit of moisturizers. If you are using several you should mix them together in your measuring cup. Add just a little bit of each kind and stir well.
5.Add your moisturizers.Slow is the only key to making your great bath salts. You will want to add the moisturizers one table spoon at a time. Stir well between each table spoon. You want to cover your salt with the oils, but you don't want them to be sopping wet.
6.Bake it.Turn your oven on warm or 200 degrees. Place your salts on the aluminum covered baking tray and place it in the oven. Depending on how much oil you have on your salts you may only need to bake your salts for 10 to 15 minutes or up to 1 hour. Check them every 10 to 15 minutes and stir them every now and again.
7.Add Baking Soda.Once they are dry or almost dry, take them from the oven and add 1/3 cup of baking soda for every 3 cups of salt. Stir it in well.

The Jar.
Now it is time to place your salts into a container of choice. You will want something that is going to keep moisture out. The most popular choice is a nice jar. This looks good in the bathroom, can be decorated, and is still easy to use, while protecting the salt from moisture which can have them sticking together. If you are giving the salts as gifts you can add a ribbon or bow to your jar, paint it, and even include a wooden scoop or a small shell for adding the bath salts to the tub. You can also include directions and labels as you see fit.

Directions
Salt is a good thing for the body (especially in the bath tub). You can add as much as you like, but should add at least 1/3 of a cup. One cup or more is even better!

That's all it takes to make quick and easy bath salts. You can choose how much you will spend and how you want it to look, smell, or even the results you want from the bath. It can be a simple and fun project or one that includes a little research and science!
